This review is from: ASUS B53J-A1B 15.6-Inch Business Laptop with Windows 7 Pro (Black) (Personal Computers) I've had this laptop for a week now, so here are my initial impressions: Upsides: 1) The screen is beautiful. The native resolution is just right for the size, and after years of owning a macbook, I had forgotten how nice a matte screen is. 2) Keyboard is well laid out and a pleasure to type on. I am extremely pleased with the addition of a 10-key. 3) This laptop is extremely fast. I purchased an 8GB RAM kit with the laptop, and have been blown away by the speed. Windows Experience Index is as follows: Processor: 6.7 RAM: 6.7 Graphics (Aero): 5.0 Gaming Graphics: 6.3 Primary Hard Disk: 5.9 In practical terms, I've been playing Starcraft 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Half-Life 2, and other slightly older games at native resolution with all other settings on high. 4) The CAC reader works and works well. This is one of the primary reasons I choose this particular laptop, and I'm pleased with it. 5) The design is sturdy and looks good. I've no doubt that it will last for years. 6) The battery holds about a 3 hour charge, with aero, wifi, etc all on. I've not yet tried turning everything off and running things. Downsides: 1) The screen seems to attract dust like nobody's business. Just opening it up and using it in a clean indoor setting, it will need to be cleaned after a few hours - fortunately the laptop includes a (very small) dust cloth which works well. 2) The black aluminum picks up fingerprints like mad. Expect to either stop caring, or to be cleaning it daily - again, just a matter of wiping it off. 3) Blotware is included. Lots and Lots of Bloatware 4) No restore CDs, but it will prompt you to create a set of restore DVDs on first boot - five DVDs, to be exact. I would much rather they just included a Windows DVD. They do include driver DVDs if you want to reformat and reinstall. All in all, I love this laptop. The hardware is great for the price ($999 when I bought it) and easily balances out the annoyance of wiping it down often. Likely if you just let your palm oil remain, it would create a more uniform patina and you wouldn't have to worry about wiping it down further. No regrets about the purchase. If you want a laptop with an integrated card reader and the ability to play games and perform at work, this is the one to get. EDIT: I've knocked this laptop down to three stars, and will be returning it after three weeks of use. I really wanted to love this laptop, but the HDMI port was defective and the battery was loose in the battery bay (it would rattle around like crazy). Even with the use of a laptop sleeve, the outside just gets filthier and filthier. I did not want glossy, too much glare/reflections. So far, the laptop has worked well. Windows 7 Professional OS is the one to have, the home version lacks a lot of networking functions that I have only discovered recently with this laptop. I'll probably be changing my home computers over to professional now. I like the switchable graphics feature, gives you the extra graphics power if you need it. The laptop runs quiet and cool even under a strong workload. The only con I would see to the laptop would be 2gb ram that came with it. I would like to have seen 4gb. This is a very easy/cheap upgrade to do that I will probably do on my own soon. The features and specs were great and I found it at a great price (more than 50% off) and that was the clincher in my final decision. I'm still installing my personal applications, setting configurations/preferences, and exploring features, but here's what I've discovered so far. Things I like: 1). Speed - even with only 2GB Ram it's very fast. (I've ordered 8G of RAM so it should be blistering soon). 2). Video - matte screen is crisp in appearance, without any glare, & is simply outstanding. 3). Software/bloatware - compared some other brands there was very little bloatware. Plus, Asus included some practical applications like "Secure Delete" that I like. 4). Keyboard - nice feel & over all large key size. 5). Touchpad - excellent sensitivity, which is somewhat subjective, but 1000X better than the HP, Toshiba, Dell, or Lenovo models I use. Plus, it has some unique capabilities & functions like "two finger scroll" that make it very easy to use. 6). Camera - the on/off slide switch & cover above the monitor is a unique feature I really like. 7). Quiet - the laptop & cooling fan are very quiet. 8). Weight - not a feather weight, but compared to my Dell Vostro 1500 it's a light weight. 9). Warranty - 36 months & 12 months accidential damage - hope I don't need them, but glad Asus offers them. Things that could be better: 1). Finish looks great, but as other reviewers have observed, it shows EVERY finger/hand print. 2). Speakers are terrible - make sure you have earphones and like using them! 3). The <Delete> key is too small and the speaker volume buttons are pathic. 4). System LEDs - they are all on the front edge of the keyboard, so when you have it sitting on your lap you cannot see any of them. Oh and they're almost all white. 5). No catch on the monitor lid. This is more and more common on all laptops/notebooks, but I don't like it. Given the features & the great price (I'd never have bought it at full price) I got it at I am very pleased. If you can find it on sale buy it; spend a few bucks on additional RAM and a cloth to wipe it down and you're set.
